CALA Assisted Living Awards

CALA excellence in service awards offer members a venue for showcasing their work, showing appreciation for those who contribute to their organizational success and, above all, honoring caregivers whose work is at the heart of all we do.


We invite you to review all the award categories outlined below and to make your nominations.


In doing so, you will play an integral part in CALAs mission: To promote excellence in Assisted Living by ASSISTING, PROMOTING, INFORMING, EDUCATING and ADVOCATING!

  • Outstanding Caregiver

    Purpose:


    Outstanding Caregiver is a CALA Distinguished Service Award, designed to honor those who go above and beyond their every day duties to enhance the quality of life for residents and for their communities. In making a nomination, please include specific actions a person has have taken to enrich the lives of residents.

    Eligibility:


    Outstanding Caregiver – Any employee (must work in a non-managerial role) of a CALA-member setting who has direct contact with the resident in the provision of care or services is eligible (this category is very broad, and includes departments such as: nursing, activities, social work, dietary, environmental services, physical therapy, and others who help care for your residents). Their supervisor, administrator or housing manager must nominate caregivers, and their nomination must include a supporting letter from a peer.


    Judges will select Outstanding Caregiver Award recipients from this pool of nominees to receive Regional Outstanding Caregiver awards.


    Regional Outstanding Caregiver award plaques will be sent to the facility for presentation. CALA also provides a prepared news release. Regional winners names are announced at the Conference but only the statewide Caregiver will receive the award at the Conference.


    Members should note that they may nominate more than one employee from their facility in this category by completing additional nomination forms.


    Judging Criteria


    This category is judged by CALA members who have volunteered their service. Judges in the Distinguished Service – Outstanding Caregiver category will particularly seek to recognize nominees who follow the philosophies of person-directed care.

    Other criteria: What has this person accomplished above and beyond his or her day-to-day job responsibilities that demonstrates an exceptional commitment to those entrusted to their care?


    (Examples: What evidence would a resident or team member see of his/her dependability, continuing development of his/her knowledge and care giving skills, and positive influence on and encouragement of others? Describe special skills or techniques he/she uses to affirm his/her respect for those he/she cares for and their close circle of family and friends, for others he/she works with in the care setting, or clear ongoing examples of extra participation or creative approaches to caring for people. In what ways does this person exemplify the CALA values at the bottom of this page?)


    What specific actions has this person taken to enhance and enrich the lives of aging persons?


    How has the person provided exceptional service to CALA-member facilities, their residents and/or the resident population in their community?


    What outstanding actions or attitudes does this person display in treating the whole person?

  • Outstanding Department Director

    Purpose


    The Outstanding Department Director Award honors those who go above and beyond to enhance the work environment in their Assisted Living community and the quality of life for their residents.


    In making a nomination, please include specific actions a nominee has taken to provide leadership to their employees, thereby resulting in enriched lives for the residents they serve.


    Eligibility


    Outstanding Department Director – Any person em- ployed in a middle management, department head or supervisory level position in an CALA-member Assisted Living community is eligible. Nominees must supervise one or more employees and have at least two years of experience. Nominees must demonstrate leadership and dedication within their role (this category is very broad and includes positions such as resident service coordinators, department heads or managers, directors of nursing or nurse supervisors, and other supervisory positions, however it does not include administrators or executives).


    The nominees supervisor, a peer, or their staff must submit the application. Their nomination should include at least two letters of support, including at least one from a peer or their supervisor, and one from someone they supervise. No more than one award is given annually.


    Judging Criteria


    This category is judged by CALA members who have volunteered their service. Judges in the Distinguished Service – Leadership Award category will particularly seek to recognize nominees who follow the philosophies of person-directed care.


    Other criteria:


    How has the person gone above and beyond in demonstrating their exceptional commitment to Colorado’s Assisted Living residents through their role (examples: How does he/she demonstrate a commitment to self-betterment, example setting, excel- lence in meeting the needs of their staff and their adult population. In what ways does this person exemplify the CALA values as expressed at the bottom of the page?)


    What has this person accomplished that demonstrates his/her commitment to a team approach for staff as a strong mentor and motivator for those they supervise? (List examples)


    What specific evidence is there that the person has served with distinction and provided exceptional service in a CALA member facility (list examples)


    What significant leadership skills has this person consistently employed in working with their staff, their adult population, and their community? (List examples).

  • Outstanding Administrator (32 beds or less)

    Purpose


    This is a statewide award designed to honor those who go “above and beyond” to enhance the work environment in their Assisted Living facility and the quality of life for their residents and the communities they serve.


    In making a nomination, please include specific actions a nominee has taken to enrich the lives of older persons; provide leadership to their staff and provide community service.


    Eligibility


    Outstanding Administrator: Any administrator employed in an CALA-member facility with at least three years of experience as an administrator is eligible. Nominations must come from a colleague in the field, board member or members of the nominee’s staff. The nomination must include at least one supporting letter from staff, one supporting letter from a resident or family member, and one supporting letter from a member of their board.


    An executive summary is also required as outlined on the entry form. No more than one award is given annually.


    Judging Criteria


    This category is judged by CALA members who have volunteered their service. Judges in the Administrator of the Year category will particularly seek to recognize nominees who follow the philosophies of person-directed care.


    Other criteria:


    How has this administrator gone “above and beyond” in commitment to Colorado;s Assisted Living residents? What specific actions demonstrate how he or she has worked to enhance and enrich the lives of aging persons and provided leadership to their caregivers.


    What examples are there of how the administrator has served with distinction in an CALA member facility and demon- strated significant potential in the field of residentcare?


    How has the administrator been outstanding in advancing the mission and goals of their facility? (Examples: local leadership in improving care; has promoted excellence and quality in resident care.)


    What contributions has the administrator made through involvement in CALA and other professional organizations related to caring for the those in need? (Example: advancing the concept of person-directed care.)


    What has the administrator undertaken and accomplished that demonstrates his/her commitment to a team approach for staff?

  • Outstanding Executive Director (more than 32 beds)

    Purpose


    This is a statewide award designed to honor those who go “above and beyond” to enhance the work environment in their Assisted Living facility and the quality of life for their residents and the communities they serve.


    In making a nomination, please include specific actions a nominee has taken to enrich the lives of residents, provide leadership to their staff and provide community service.


    Eligibility


    Outstanding Executive Director: Any Executive Director employed in an CALA-member facility with at least three years of experience as an Executive Director/administrator is eligible. Nominations must come from a colleague in the field, board member or members of the nominee’s staff. The nomination must include at least one supporting letter from staff, one supporting letter from a resident or family member, and one supporting letter from a member of their board.


    An executive summary is also required as outlined on the entry form. No more than one award is given annually.


    Judging Criteria


    This category is judged by CALA members who have volunteered their service. Judges in the Outstanding Executive Director category will particularly seek to recognize nominees who follow the philosophies of person-directed care.


    How has this Executive Director gone “above and beyond” in commitment to Colorado’s Assisted Living residents? What specific actions demonstrate how he or she has worked to enhance and enrich the lives of residents and provided leadership to their caregivers.
